As we enter Mother’s Day Weekend, I just want to pause and say thank you to all the mothers for the amazing job you do each day. You have an around-the-clock job that requires you to continuously give and remain selfless. Our world is certainly a better place because of the unfailing love of mothers.

I stand in awe of the power of a mother’s influence. The term influence means the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something. When I think of my Mother, she certainly has a powerful influence on the lives of her children, grandchild, nieces, nephews, and countless others. My Mother’s influence in my life can be found in my commitment to church and God, in how I interact with others, in my personal style, in my pursuit of excellence, and the list goes on. I am eternally grateful to God for my Mother and her influence in my life.

I often think of my black female enslaved ancestors who not only had to raise their children but the children of their master’s household. I think of those who served as maids and nannies. All these amazing women who were often mothers, had a powerful influence on American society. Also, I must acknowledge the influence of our single mothers. They show society and their children that success can be achieved for their households. Further, I can’t forget the influence of grandmothers and mother figures who step in to assist children to whom they did not give birth.

I hope that all Mothers will enjoy their special day this weekend. I salute you for the powerful influence that you have on our society!
